Highlights

Tarangire National Park has a great name, called the Home of Elephants. The large numbers of elephants, wildlife migration, baobab trees (these grow in the open acacia), in addition to the tree climbing African pythons, give wonderful sightings to see, which make Tarangire a popular destination.

Day by Day Itinerary

Arrive in Arusha and be picked up from Kuro Airstrip by your guide, followed by a full day game drive in Tarangire National Park. In the afternoon, your driver will prepare and set a very delicious lunch. Continue with game drive until evening, then drive to the Camp Acacia Tarangire Luxury Camp for dinner and overnight.

The Park Located slightly off the main safari route, Tarangire National Park is a lovely, quiet park in Northern Tanzania that is most famous for its elephant migration, birding and quiet, authentic safari atmosphere. The majority of travelers to the region either miss out on Tarangire altogether or venture into the park for a matter of hours, leaving parts of Tarangire virtually untouched.

Every year during the dry season from June to November, Tarangire hosts a wildlife migration which is not as dramatic as the Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti but still receives a somewhat large number of animals. As most of this part of the country is dry, the Tarangire River remains the only source of water and consequently attracts large numbers of wildebeests, elephants, gazelles, zebras, and hartebeest, buffaloes, plus various predators like lions that come to drink and graze around the river banks. The zebras as well as large herds of wildebeests move in the north-western direction towards the Rift Valley floor amongst the large numbers of animals that are spread across the large open areas of the Masaai Steppe and disperse all the way to Lake Manyara.

Early morning hot air balloon safari; after breakfast, another full day game drive at Tarangire National Park with lunch; in the evening, back to the Acacia Tarangire Luxury Camp for dinner and overnight.

Herds of up to 300 elephants scratch the dry river bed for underground streams. It’s the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem—a smorgasbord for predators—and the one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelope such as the stately fringe-eared oryx and peculiar long-necked gerenuk are regularly observed. The permanent Tarangire River is the most dominant feature here, and it’s after this river that the park was named. There are a number of large swamps that feed off some of its tributaries. However, these are usually dry for most of the year but get very impassable during the rains. The Tarangire park is usually very dry, in fact drier than the Serengeti, but its vegetation is much more green, especially with lots of elephant grass, vast areas with mixed acacia woodlands and some of the wonderful ribbons of the aquatic forest. Not to forget the giant baobab tree that can live up to 600 years, storing between 300 and 900 liters of water.

After breakfast, a morning walking safari guided by an armed ranger; in the afternoon, after lunch, transfer to Kuro Airstrip for your flight back to Arusha.

Set off on foot towards one of the most secluded parts of the Tarangire National Park, accompanied by a trained and experienced field guide. Guides will expertly teach you how to recognize and follow various wildlife tracks.

Experience the excitement of encountering and tracking animals on foot. Awaken every sense, fully embracing a world where each sound, scent, and bent blade of grass is significant.
This will provide you with a better learning experience about the smaller animals in the bush land as well as a better way of spotting the animals at close range without disturbing them.
Taking into consideration what you are looking for in terms of wildlife and bird watching, you can travel to Tarangire National Park on your safari to Tanzania. The dry season offers you the best time to watch lots of animals, which comes between June and September, being the best time to go on a safari.
